The Healing Benefits of EMDR Therapy
EMDR therapy has been gaining recognition for its profound impact on mental health, and its transformative potential was brought into the spotlight when Prince Harry revealed how it helped him process the loss of his mother, Princess Diana. He shared that EMDR was something he had always wanted to try and explained how walking behind his mother’s coffin during her funeral procession at the age of 12 turned London into a place filled with emotional triggers and painful memories. Through EMDR, he was able to release the emotional flashbacks and triggers that had haunted him for years.

What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy was developed in the 1980s by Francine Shapiro as a way to alleviate the distressing symptoms associated with traumatic memories. EMDR involves guided lateral eye movements—moving the eyes left and right—while focusing on traumatic memories or emotions. Research suggests that distressing events can become "trapped" in the brain’s right hemisphere, causing emotional reactivity and reliving of the trauma. EMDR’s lateral eye movements facilitate the processing and release of these stuck memories, allowing the brain to reprocess the event more adaptively.
How Is EMDR Different from Talk Therapy?
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR involves a more sensory-based approach. Clients are guided to recall not only the emotional aspects of a traumatic memory but also the physical sensations and other sensory experiences associated with it. By doing so, EMDR activates the brain’s natural ability to reprocess trauma, essentially "rewiring" the neural network. This process removes the emotional charge linked to the traumatic event, transforming it into a memory without the intense triggers that once accompanied it.

The Life-Changing Potential of EMDR
EMDR can be life-changing, offering profound relief from the emotional burdens of distressing events. It is particularly effective in treating conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression. When combined with hypnotherapy, its benefits can be amplified, providing an even deeper level of healing.
One of my recent clients shared her experience with EMDR therapy:
"EMDR has helped me with my anxiety, PTSD, and depression. I’ve been doing it consistently for nine months, and while it’s intense, it’s also transformative. For me, it’s trippy—it breaks down the default mode network of everyday life and feels like it transports me back in time to the memory of the traumas. I can process things I’ve compartmentalized. It goes beyond language; I feel all the thoughts, feelings, and intentions about the stressful events without reliving the trauma.
After working with two EMDR therapists, I’d recommend finding someone you trust. It’s important to work with a therapist who takes the time to understand your story and how you might respond before jumping straight into EMDR. This ensures they can guide you effectively and provide helpful feedback between sets of bilateral stimulation. I went to Denise Richards, who was referred by a friend. She works both remotely and face-to-face if you’re fortunate enough to live near her."
Is EMDR Right for You?
If you’ve been struggling with unresolved trauma, anxiety, or emotional distress, EMDR therapy could be a powerful tool in your healing journey. By reprocessing painful memories in a safe and structured environment, you can regain control of your emotional well-being and move forward with greater peace and resilience.
Whether you’re seeking remote sessions or in-person support, I’m here to help guide you through this transformative process with compassion and care.
